Are you on LinkedIn? Of the many different social media accounts a company can have, it can be very easy to focus on those that appear to have the quickest Return on Investment (ROI), but often social media is not built around a measurable ROI. The common question asked on the Internet about the ROI of social media is “What is the ROI of your mom?” While initially jarring, this question raises important issues about the nature of Social Media, business, ROI, and long term benefits and relationships.
LinkedIn, in a brief description, is social media networking for businesses, business professionals, workers, and more. Typically people who are on LinkedIn are sharing their resumes, building professional networks, staying in touch with former colleagues, and much more. While there is an advertising component to LinkedIn, this often takes the back seat to more friendly invitational types of marketing, such as inviting people to your latest conference or having a business meetup and cookout.
MSN’s Business On Main has an article up asking How Do You Use LinkedIn? While geared toward young business people, the article is a series of questions asking common questions about usage of LinkedIn and how best to use it to your advantage.
Q: I just joined LinkedIn. What are some ways I can utilize the social network to help me market, sell and brand my company?
If you don’t have a network established on LinkedIn, reach out to people you know on Facebook, Twitter or blogs. Connect with them on LinkedIn, and ask them for introductions or recommendations.
A: Very Few People Like to Be Sold on Anything
Forget the hard sell when it comes to social media. Develop a content action plan that is geared toward education and information. Once people realize you are a credible source, and that you care, then they are more apt to seek out your products and services. Social media is a two-way conversation that should educate, inform and inspire.
A: Utilize Your Tagline
The key to LinkedIn is making what you do crystal clear. Therefore, the most important part of your profile is the tagline below your name. People will see this right away, without even clicking on your profile. Therefore, instead of writing “CEO of _____ ,” say what it is you actually do. For example, my tagline is “Communications expert that helps companies grow through publicity campaigns.”
